According to TV personalities like Doctor Oz, Forskolin is "a breakthrough miracle weight-loss solution!"
But we've all heard this pitch before. In fact, many of us have forked over our hard earned cash for products with similar claims, only to be disappointed when they did absolutely nothing to help us lose weight.
Is Forskolin any different?
Does it actually work?
Or is this just another over-hyped, ineffective weight-loss supplement?
Well, that's exactly what we're going to discus in this article, but I'll give you a hint...
Forskolin does work.
I wouldn't call it a miracle, but if you're trying to burn fat or lose weight, it's definitely worth using, and in this article, we're going to go over everything you need to know.
By the end, you'll known exactly how to use Forskolin to maximize your fat-loss efforts.
What Is Forskolin?
Forskolin is the active chemical component of the herb, Coleus Forskohlii.
Coleus Forskohlii has been used for thousands of years throughout traditional system of medicines and is believed to have a variety of health benefits.
Forskolin isn't the only molecule found in Coleus Forskohlii, but it appears to be responsible for the majority of the benefits.
That's why most Coleus Forskohlii supplements are standardized for an exact percentage of Forskolin.
Why Do People Supplement With Forskolin?
Most people who use Forskolin supplements are doing so for the weight-loss benefits.
Supplementation with Forskolin has been shown to reduce fat mass and cause meaningful weight-loss when used daily for several weeks.
Research also indicates Forskolin increases Testeosterone in men, which may make it slightly more effective as a fat-burner since Testosterone has inherent fat-burning properties as well.
But Forskolin's mechanism of action (the way it works) has nothing to do with Testoserone.

How Does Forskolin Work?
Forskolin works by increasing levels of Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a signaling molecule which sets in motion a series of physiological changes, including:
- increasing fatty acid utilization
- increasing the metabolic rate

Increasing cAMP is considered a reliable way to induce fat-loss, so anything that can increase cAMP level is going to be looked at as a fat-loss agent, of course.
What Are The Benefits Of Forskolin?
Forskolin has been alleged to provide many benefits, but most of the research has focused on one area in particular:
Forskolin Helps You Lose Weight
Forskolin has been investigated in a few studies, specifically for weight-loss.
In one study, Forskolin prevented weight gain in overweight (but otherwise healthy) female subjects, at 50mg/day.
Another study--this time the subjects were adult males--found that Forskolin supplementation reduced body fat percentage.
Forskolin has also been shown to reduce Body Mass Index (BMI) by about 2.5% over a 12 week period, though fat-loss wasn't within the scope of the study.
BMI is one metric for evaluating your body composition. It's calculated as your weight (kilograms) divided by the square of your height (in meters).
In other words, it's a numerical representation of the relationship between your height and your weight.
A high BMI can be an indication of high body fat, but a high BMI could also be someone who's extremely muscular, so it's not really the most accurate method of assessing body composition.
However, the subjects in the study where Forskolin reduced BMI weren't bodybuilders or even people who necessarily worked out.
In that situation, a lower BMI would likely correspond to lower body fat.
So, what we have here are several studies which indicate Forskolin can help you lose weight and reduce your body fat percentage.
What Other Benefits Might Forskolin Possess?
Since Forskolin works by increasing cAMP, and cAMP triggers a wide range of physiological changes, other benefits have been theorized.
While there isn't much in the way of direct evidence for any benefits other than weight-loss, there are some potential benefits worth mentioning.
Forskolin Increases Testosterone
In one of the studies I referenced above, in which Forskolin was shown to reduce fat mass in adult men, there was also an increase in Testosterone.
It's not clear whether this increase in Testosterone was great enough to further amplify the fat-burning effects, but it may explain why the study in men saw a greater result with the same dose, compared to the study in women.
The good is that, if you're a girl, you don't have to worry about Forskolin increase your Testosterone.
It's a just a plus for the guys.
Forskolin May Have Cardiovascular Benefits
Forskolin has been shown to reduce blood pressure in people with hypotension (high blood pressure).
It's not overly effective compared to most blood pressure medications, but it also doesn't come with the risk of blood pressure dropping too low.
There is also some preliminary evidence which suggests Forskolin, via increasing cAMP, can have a beneficial impact on the heart.
Forskolin May Enhance Muscle Building
It has been speculated that Forskolin can increase muscle protein synthesis as well.
This is based on the notion that increasing cAMP causes increases in PI3K and Akt which in turn signal muscle protein synthesis.
It may be true. It may not be true. There are no studies investigated the impact of Forskolin on muscle building at this time.
All the studies in which Forskolin was shown to induce be beneficial for weight-loss used 50mg/day.
That's the dosage I would recommend taking.
It's not clear whether timing really matters with Forskolin and, since it's not a stimulant, you don't have to worry about it interfering with your sleep.
You can take 25mg twice a day with meals, or just gobble up the whole 50mg with one meal.
It won't make any sort of meaningful difference in the long run.
Does Forskolin Cause Any Side Effects?
Forskolin does not appear to cause any kind of notable side effects in normal healthy people, but it can potentially increase stomach acid levels.
For that reason, it's not recommended for people with stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal issues.
You should always consult with your doctor before taking any supplement if you have a pre-existing medical condition.
That said, if you're healthy, you have nothing to fear from Forskolin. It's perfectly safe.
What Kind Of Results Can You Expect With Forskolin?
The most weight-loss observed with Forskolin was about 4.5kg, or a little less than 10lbs, in 12 weeks.
Assuming you're dosing it right and getting your Forskolin from a reliable company, you can expect it to help you lose a couple pounds a month.
10 pounds in 3 months may not seem like much, but that's just one supplement.
